Lucien Cariat 1919 bronze athletics medal

This bronze medal is by L Cariat. The obverse depicts a man, Hippomenes and a woman, Atalanta. They are both running and Hippomenes is clutching golden apples whilst Atalanta is bending down to pick up one of the golden apples that he has thrown thus enabling Hippomenes to win the race and claim Atalanta as his bride. It is signed "L Cariat".
The reverse depicts a temple on a hill in the background with olive branches and a palm frond in the foreground surrounding a round cartouche that has been engraved " Cdr W Stevens D/277 Bde A.F.A. 2nd 1 Mile Inter Allies Sports June 9th 1919". The reverse is also signed "L Cariat". The rim is stamped "Bronze": and has the Cornucopia mark of the Monnaie de Paris. The medal is boxed.
