Mappin & Webb large silver plated wine cooler with cover & internal canister

This wonderful large silver plated wine cooler is by the English company Mappin & Webb. The cooler is slightly tapered and has three raised but integral hoops as you would see on an old beer keg/barrel. The handles are shaped like flat bottomed upside down "U". the cover is slightly downed with round ring handles and a hole in the centre that sits around the neck of the bottle. There is a cylindrical removable canister inside the cooler.

The base is stamped "Mappin & Webb Electro Plate Britannia metal Sheffield & London 5658".

I have described this a cooler rather than an ice bucket as I think cold water rather than ice would have been put into the bucket and the canister containing the wine bottle would then have been put into the bucket. There is insufficient room to put ice between the canister and the inner wall of the bucket, unless crushed ice was used. I am aware that I might be treading on thin ice here! Anyway whatever the description it is still a magnificent & useful thing and could also be used for flowers just as well as for a bottle!
